TURN IT UP, BRING THE NOISE..POP

It’s been a hot minute since I posted on music so here is my lead for you this week.

noisepopfestival_25.jpg

San Francisco is ever morphing and ever changing. San Francisco’s music scene is ever- morphing and ever changing. And happening this week  NOISEPOP is celebrating its 25 year run.

For those of you who aren’t familiar with The Noisepop Festival, it’s a Festival that takes over different venue showcasing bands, art, and film. It’s kind of a Where’s Waldo adventure in a way because you are the one with the pass or show ticket and you show up to the venue. Festival goers who have the week long passes make their way and venue hop checking out the different NOISE POP makers. This is a time to take in what the current San Francisco scene is music + culture+ ole skool + tech  + people reacting = This year’s Noise Pop has grown. I find it cool that it offers free and paid shows, this is always cool. So people can at least go do stuff on the cheap, you just have to get to the showcase spots. It’s also a special time in a band’s career to be playing at festivals like these because they are still accessible and there is a high probability you may be able to get a quick meet n’ greet. You get the new record and an autograph and support the band it’s a win win. The best part is that you may see a band you never heard of or had an impromptu experience of some kind that really blows your mind. (EVEN BETTER)

Upon perusing the Noisepop handbill of all the shows there was the film stuff, of course they were one day one off you had to be there showcases or podcast answer / question lectures that is something I am gonna need to get on top of for next year.

Bands on the bills are on touring, local, a mix bag of tricks. A good number of them are making their way to SXSW which happens in Austin, TX in March. So if you cannot make your way to SXSW and you live in the Bay this is a good showcase festival.

Noisepop also is connected and for those who are far away never fear they have a website, and I know that live podcasting of shows and interviews are happening so go and GOOGLE.

The rain has finally let up get out and go to something fun with your friends, make new friends. San Francisco will always be a potluck of music genres and experiences it’s what we each bring to the table to share. My wish for all of you this week is MUSIC + RAINBOWS + AND REALLY LIVING THE SAN FRANCISCO EXPERIENCE.

This week I have worked some shows and worked for a band or two, and it really always amazes me that the San Francisco stop is such a hi-light on tour. I can’t tell you that bands no matter what level they love playing San Francisco. There will always be something energetic, nostalgic, and memorable that this city offers artists. There is something that happens when you cross one of our two iconic bridges, and then making your way through the city, driving through the different neighborhoods finally making it to sound check.

TECH-LEECH

THE VIEWS EXPRESSED BY CHECKMYCOAT BLOG ON WORDPRESS  ARE SOLEY OF THE AUTHOR AND MAY BE OFFENSIVE IF YOU ARE EASILY OFFENDED THEN STOP READING

attackofthegiantleeches.jpg

For the Checkmycoat readers all over the world following my blog, seems as if I have encountered a BITER in my midst. What is a BITER you ask? Someone who is a leech an art leech, in my case I am claiming this person is a TECH-LEECH: someone who codes and steals ideas. (you know who you are)

Let me refresh you on this. ART is all encompassing inspiration it pushes you to have an opinion. When you are inspired by a piece of art and you create something INSPIRED. Then there are those LEECHES that steal ideas without permission or for whatever personal gain. With that being said I am pissed.

I started to talk to different people about this situation I have found myself in.

One person I recently met who was in his 20’s said I got API’d. It sounded similar to a KO punch. Of course, I had no idea what this meant so I was like what is that? Basically, coder trolls from whatever rock they live under scour the internet and find IDEAS that creative people come up with and develop whatever shit they want to market. Companies pay creative types for this kind of work, and then it gets translated into code.  To be honest I was stunned and then I became pissed. I get it we live in a world where respect, reverence, and being decent has taken a back seat. It’s the insta – everything without looking up; mow everything down to get what you want THE WILD WILD WEST online (I get it) but at the end of the day you got to call a spade a spade and there is a difference between right and wrong. That is called short term satisfaction, and will give you the minimal quality of life experience, but to each his/her own. (You do you)

I spoke to some other friends who are also artists and we all agreed that YES it is FUCKED UP! But, if you put it out on the internet without LEGAL protection artists and/or anyone is basically at the risked of getting FUCKED by a TECH-LEECH, a BITER. All these rules and laws and permits and licenses have their place in business and politics because it is $, and it’s just how the NON-ARTISTS justify a place for the creatives with a whole bunch of paper rules.

FUCK THE RULES

FUCK TECH- LEECHES

FUCK PEOPLE WHO STEAL TO GET AHEAD

*It doesn’t get you there any faster

I was also reminded by my fellow artist friends that I am hyper creative and come up with shit all the time, but projects are like kids it gets personal when some outsider you don’t know messes with your stuff there will always be the reaction, and that is where I am at with this (THE REACTION). For now I am reacting on my blog, it will be interesting to see how the story unfolds on this and I will be keeping you all aware.

To all artists out there keep creating no one can be YOU! No one can be in your head! Stick up for each other, and if need be throw some digital molotovs.

COAT CHECK N.Y.E. 2017

New Year ! New Energy, back to the Blog!

First of all HAPPY NEW YEAR!

It’s not todays news but a pretty first memorable moment bringing in the new year! I have to endulge in my celebrity sweet tooth especially when it’s a crash and burn.

TAH DAH ….. IT’S MARIAH! Working in this type of environment here is my 2 cents check out the video.

So I came home to this news all over the internet. It was a slow moving trainwreck from the get go. Seems like the production behind the performance had some unavoidable holes that could not be patched up.There are all kinds of blame being issued from both sides.

Kudos Mariah  She wore a coat!  She did a burlesque type of entrance with the feathers and the feather coat – here is the beginning of the mishap

Mariah probably did have a dress rehersal with this group of dancers at somepoint. My question is: Mariah did you practice with that exact coat? The reason why I bring this up is that by practicing with the garment and being familiar with how it handles. This would certainly played into the ease of the costume change. This is where the production people can see if this shit is going to work EDIT EDIT EDIT.

Notice the feather fans close, and then they open and BAM no coat. What you do notice is the dancer struggling with the removal, trying to quickly replace something. My spidey sense tells me that during the removal somthing disconnected or some thing was triggered that messed up the in ear monitor . She also comes across agigtated when being escourted down the stairs and mumbles something to her dancer on the right.

For those who have never handled an in-ear monitor. THEY ARE FUSSY! Expect error at anytime. Pros  pay the big bucks for this shit to work right. No one working such a large gig,  wants to be on the audio crew that did Mariah’s sound that night. How embrassing. Who knows who put it on…it could have been one of her staff, or the staff of Dick Clark Productions! These are the questions we need answers too.

And by the looks of the video bring on the rest of the trainwreck.

Performing artists should always try and surround themselves with pro’s and if you are working with crews you don’t know replay back soundcheck and see where the flaws are. Big shows like these need YOU the  artist to do whatever it takes. Channel your inner James Brown, Michael Jackson, Frank Zappa, even Cyndi Lauper she will cut you if she doesn’t have her soundcheck down ( I have seen it happen). These artists were in total control of every aspect of the show; James Brown was such a perfectionist that every mistake made the musician got fined for the mistake. Mariah- Girl you got too many YES people.

The New Year is here, and yes I was coat checking on N.Y.E.

The weather that night was mild rain.

This year I found the crowd attending were not bogged down by the extremely heavy bulky wool coats. (which was a nice surprise) People came out with the small puffys, windbreakers, fashion furs, a few light coats. A coat checker is subject to the crowd’s fashion sense. So what does a coat checker / checkers go through on NYE. Well first off, it is one of the most important holidays of the year for a coat checker. It’s definitely going to be a night where you will checking them in and as fast as they came in, then you have the pickup so there will be straight non-stop coat checking action. Prices for coat check may fluctuate that night because of special event pricing, very comparable to world of Valet parking. And any seasoned coat checker knows that this is an “amateur” crowd. This is when the masses come out that normally don’t get out.  Multiple levels of partying experience all under one roof waiting for the balloons to drop, all being woo woo’d by the open bar. Yes, people do not mess around on this holiday they have invested a couple hundred dollars for the ticket to enter and to drink . They arrive early to take advantage of the spirits, and to get pumped! It is a night  for singles, daters, the married, the divorced, the cheaters, all walks of life partying under one roof. Everyone getting lit within a 3-4 hour span. And us coat checkers are witnessing our own version of slo motion party cam, as people get loose, and down right sloppy. All par for the course. We are the beacons of light in the sea of faded partygoers. A light to find your wallet, your party favors, your lipstick, your cigarettes, and your people, and strangers that happen to be there when you are lit and divulging your “truth= gossip”.

GIVEN: There is always one guarantee of some type of argument, and someone who ends up in tears.

Stats: 1 set of tears reported

I ended up packing up around last call and all my hard work paid off. People were very cool and tipped which made my night. Tips are not mandatory but if you really did get someone who is super cool and awesome and got you what you needed droppin’ a little something in the tip jar is always a nice gesture. Cheers to my fellow COAT CHECKERS, may your TIP buckets run a plenty in 2017!

Friends how many of us have them?

It’s that day the group decides to get together and hit up a show or a festival. You all have made plans for a few weeks and the posse is back to make some memories happen. Deep inside you know that this is gonna be one of those nights of partying that you all will be talking about because you all came ready to party.

I get these kinds of group outings all the time coming to coat check, I think it’s great. You can’t have enough good times with your crew.

Here’s where it gets interesting, you got the core group and along the way new folks get added by date, new girlfriend/boyfriend status,  co-worker , friend of a friend, blind date etc. So the entire group has grown in size and you don’t know how these new people hang in terms of letting lose.

So the night goes on and you are well on your way after a few drinks through the first 5 songs in the concert, everyone is feeling great. Then someone busts out the pills, and or a strong ass blunt and the combination of the whole party package sets all you all in a great party time atmosphere and then…

Cue THE HOT MESS… you have one person in this group going down. It’s so loud that the MAYDAY call is not being heard by the group because people are partying and scattered throughout the concert. And you happen to know that it’s someone newer to the group, you don’t really know. T he million dollar question is DO YOU CLAIM THEM?

All kinds of decision-making skills are required and you’re having fun and loaded.

DAMN GINA what to do?!

Of course, the expectation is to help… or do you send them to the school of LIVE and LEARN the school of hard knox, that’s life?

Claim your friend? or Not. That is the double barrel loaded party question of the night.

 _________________________________________________________________

I actually had this happen the about a week ago, in a group of 4 people going out. Luckily, the girl needing assistance had a strong backup because THEY CLAIMED her. Her friend was partying but was able to somehow get her coat check ticket and get her coat for her, and the whole group ended up leaving the show right about hitting the middle set.

It was a group decision but none the less they all made the ‘E’ for effort to help their friend.

The not so cool version/ bad date version – The entire group comes drops off their stuff…the person is so trashed  but still able to barely, the entire group is doing their own thing and the person that is closest to the fucked up person gets the person’s belongings and says I’ll be right back I’m gonna get this person out and put them in a cab and I’ll be back for the rest of the show. ( true story it was a first or second date and he sent her off wishing her well.)  So this was a partial claim but a diss in the same way. Actually, she was lucky that she got the cab service to take her.

_________________________________________________________________

There is no true right answer. It boils down to the group, and an individual’s basic moral principles. The group will always have some like minded streams of thoughts and actions. But at the end of the night, it’s also YOUR common sense.

It’s times like these that I am reminded of my friends and the crazy party times we have all had. You will at some point be in the company of a group, a few , or just one person, or alone.

Advice: Claim yourself.. (know how you party; if you’re new to the group figure out how they party and go from there.)

If your alone have your shit straight before you go crazy especially if you’re traveling to some other country where the language is different… that is another level of partying.

Give Karma back if Karma is kind to you… if someone has claimed you,  claim someone else too when you can… you can never have too many “GOOD” party points.

SHARING IS CARING

The land of Coat Check has been pretty consistent lately, the weather is of course a friend to us coat checkers because it makes people wear more layers and accessorize. And people are definitely antsy to get out and do something. I have been seeing familiar faces and meeting new people and having cool conversations with them.

My most recent cool conversation topic was with a patron name Emily. She and I got to talking she had also been a coat checker at some point in her life and we got to talking about “coat check”, I get some of my best insights with other coat checkers. I shared with her that what I noticed the most was the newly turned 21 patrons approach coat check. I told her that there is definitely a social divide because 75 percent of them are unsure how coat check works, so I have to give the quick instructions on how it works. I definitely think that since I was 21 this new crowd of night owls is not getting the true “how to go out” instruction. When I was about 21 and going out I was so lucky to have friends that varied in ages. My group of friends was multiple circles of people in their 20’s, 30’s and even 40’s, so going out with them was not only a good time but I was also learning how to go out.

The conversation steered into talking about younger people. I told her honestly that I didn’t really have a frame of reference of interacting with younger people because I just didn’t really know any because they are not in my immediate circle, and to be honest I really don’t want to interact because most of the younger people that I see on a daily basis are actin’ a fool in large public places they don’t know how to control themselves and be chill in public; or the other spectrum is that their faces are buried in their phones.

Emily shared that she did work with young people, and all I could think was whoops! my perspective was not so happy Hello Kitty. BUT, the other part of me was like “Good for you.” Really, truly, I was taken back by her choice to work with youth, people that work with youth I totally Salute you.

The last part of the conversation was quirky coat check stories that had recently happened of blind dates gone wrong on Tinder… and how these big online digital dating platforms are showing up and morphing the social dating scene. And what do you have left is someone like me experiencing some off the cuff drama from something that was started through an app. Life is crazy like that. ( check out my last blog installment on that topic)

Patrons always ask what is the best show you have seen here in the coat check. DRUM ROLL!! I have a few but I am going to be really specific and what my brain fires off too first.

DIE ANTWOORD – this show made me LOVE them I had no idea who they were

BRIDGET EVERETT – Okay, brace yourself when you go to her comedy show. GO TO HER SHOW! she is not holds barred knock ya in the teeth funny, provocative, smart, and WOMAN!

BIG FREEDA – As my home girl put it, it was the OLYMPICS of twerking. Yes! Yes! Triple YAAAASSS! You want to get schooled , scream your ass off, see a bomb ass visual show then GO SEE BIG FREEDA! GURL!

I will work on getting what is the worst show I have seen for next time.

Swiping Right or Left

mobiledateapp

This blog entry is  dedicated to those on the hunt for the right app, and to those who ultimately are on the quest to find troo luv…(elmer fud voice)

You have Tinder, Ginder, Grouper, How About We, Plenty of Fish, Christian Mingle… the list is growing everyday more apps! more apps!

YIKES! And that is just me googling dating apps I am sure that the rabbit hole of dating apps gets hella freaky to each (his/her) own.

And by now you are wondering what is a coat check blog have to do with a dating app?

Ahh Haa! My friends, the awesome people that read my blog this is the juicy stuff you all become flys on the wall for.

Let me start from the beginning because technically this was a seedling of a thought that bloomed over 6 months.

So 6 months ago, I had a couple come to the coat check,  they normally checked their coats. I took their coats and presented them with two tickets which is totally the deal because we rock the coat check per item. The show is full swing there were 3 bands that night, the lady comes back at the end of the second band, and obviously she had a couple of drinks in her enough to spill the beans.

Me: Picking up early?

Lady: I am so glad that you gave us two tickets

Lady: I just need my coat

Me: No problem

Lady: Have you ever done Tinder?

Me: No, but I have an idea of what it is

Lady: Well, this was my first time on it and I will NEVER do it again

Me: Oh no!

Lady: This guy buys me a couple of drinks and starts pawing me and wants to leave early to go back to his house

Me: Oh damn, so sorry about that but you are making the executive decision and good for you

Lady: I am just glad that you didn’t give us one ticket because I don’t want to see his face again, at all he’s a douche bag

Me: I get you

Lady: (Marches off upset)

Me: WHOA! what just happened?! I need to put this in my blog…

_________________________________________________________________

Man: Gives me the ticket

Me: I give him the jacket and (the look) I know everything…

And, that is how a coat checker becomes the all-knowing entity. I know what happened on this digital blind date gone bad!

I often wonder besides the lady going back to discussing what a shitty date she had with her girls, I wonder if the dating apps of the world know the odd social waves that are surfacing, recreating/reemphasizing social cues.

Obviously, it’s nothing new. Blind dates have been around for a long time. We have heard about successful/ unsuccessful  dates from friends, strangers, people talking loudly in public about their own experiences. Blind dates have evolved you can thank the Internet! You put that digital twist of swiping right or left, and it becomes that Choose your own adventure book. (remember those from the 80’s) it’s part of dating and gages your own personal dos, don’ts and never agains. It adds to your own personal arsenal of self.

About a month ago, I was talking to a cab driver taking me home from work and we got talking about apps, and I joked about the swiping dating apps because I had dealt with another blind date scenario at work. And, this is what he had to say being a cab driver. People are so into their phones and apps, that they don’t have to leave the house to meet people. Back in the day, you’d go out by yourself or with friends drop $50-$100 bucks, interact face to face with people and take it from there. Now, you just swipe based on a profile.  It’s has streamlined everything for people, and some of the realness of just meeting people genuinely has been altered. He shared that he uses the apps, nothing really bad to say, except that if these were around 20 years ago that he would have saved a lot of money. Ha Ha Ha! Interesting perspective.

This is me doing a good deed to those out there who are not too schooled, and have no older friends to refer to for social cues

What I am witnessing is an across the board interaction of novice app users to people who have been at it for awhile. And, there are some social cues one may want to earmark if you are going to participate in digital dating.

-Go out somewhere social – Given everyone knows this

-Look nice but don’t wear your coveted name brand clothes save that for another date – you might not come back with your Prada jacket – speaking of a good or bad date

-Pay your own way – If your date has no money and keeps giving your that blank look or inferring silently to take the tab – heads up

-Be true to yourself, ask yourself before drinking and during drinking or whatever – Am I having a good time?

-And make sure you have an app on your phone for a ride – because If you are using a dating app you’d obviously have a get a ride app

-If you are checking in your coat – GET SEPARATE TICKETS – you never know

Coat checkers are the eyes and ears of nightlife, we witness the little and big social interactions from the time you arrive until the time you leave

Fast forward to last night

I had a girl come to coat check with two jackets, I gave her two tickets and asked her if she would like them hung separately she replied, “together is fine on the same hanger.” She had this puzzling look, I said you never know, I get people all the time on blind dates and sometimes they don’t turn out so good. She started to laugh, and she said, “I never thought of it like that.” She came back at the end of the night smiling saying “ we are still together after two hours.”

I know that big holiday with a heart is coming up… YOUR WELCOME!

Until next time,
